#FancyReviews: Is FitBit The Best Fitness Accessory For You?

Summer is when we all want to get in shape right ladies? We tested out the FitBit so you don’t have to in this weeks #FancyReviews: Is FitBit The Best Fitness Accessory For You?

If you are like me then you have heard so much about the FitBit. I have had family tell me how it has improved their fitness, I have seen friends sharing their daily step count on Instagram (way to make the rest of us feel lazy) and I have been intrigued. However, I never managed to get sucked into the type. I thought surely there is a better way to stay on track with your health and fitness goals…

What Is A FitBit?

A FitBit is wearable technology that allows you to track your health and fitness levels. Some of the data it measures includes the number of steps you have walked, your quality of sleep, heart rate, amount of time and amount of calories you have burned during exercise and more. The aim of a FitBit is to make people more aware of how active or inactive they are and how many calories they are eating. This in turn should help them stay on track. Every little bit helps!

What Is The FitBit Charge 2?

The FitBit Charge 2 is a newer edition of the FitBit with the following features;

  • Pure Pulse Heart Rate – reads your heart beats per minute.
  • Multi sport tracking – tracks different exerises such as weights, running, treadmill, bike etc.
  • GPS – tracks your journey when jogging.
  • Call, text and calendar alerts – lets you know when you have notifications on your phone.
  • Cardio fitness level – tests your cardio fitness level to help you improve.
  • Guided breathing session – guides you through a two minute breathing exercise.
  • Auto sleep tracking – tracks your light sleep, deep sleep, REM and how long you are awake for.
  • Interchangeable bands – you can purchase different colour bands to match different outfits.
  • Large OLED tap screen – Large tap screen helps you easily move through each feature.
  • Up to 5 days battery life – Long battery life is always a huge plus right ladies?!

How Does It Look On?

How it looked was definitely something I was concerned about initially. I didn’t want to wear something big and bulky and I didn’t want it to be obvious that I was actually wearing a FitBit. When my sister came to visit a while back she was wearing the Charge 2 and I was pleasantly surprised. It just looked like a sleek watch, not too big or ‘in your face’. Perfect! This was the final decider for me and I placed my order. I was delighted to find that it was also quite comfortable to wear when I put it on. It just felt like I was wearing a watch whether I was sitting in the office or going for a jog. I was very interested to find out about the sleep tracking but was concerned again that this might be uncomfortable to wear at night time. Luckily it isn’t. I slightly loosen the strap at night time so it isn’t too tight and this is normally perfect.

My Opinion

Compared to other apps

I am not one to buy into ‘gimmicks’ very easily but I really like the FitBit. I have been using the inbuilt Samsung Health app on my phone until now and find the FitBit much better. The Samsung app is often inaccurate. You can literally tap your phone off your hand a hundred times and that counts as a hundred steps. Now that’s just cheating ladies…I love how accurate the FitBit is in relation to steps, calories lost and sleep tracking.

Best feature

One of the features I was most impressed by was the sleep tracker. I am not a great sleeper and I definitely don’t get enough sleep. It was so interesting to see just how much light sleep, deep sleep, REM I get and how many times I wake up. I apparently wake a lot during the night! This has been beneficial to me mainly because it showed how little sleep I was getting. I now make a better effort to go to bed earlier and take time to wind down beforehand. Because of this I now see an improvement and I feel more rested in the morning.

Only concern

The only concern I have with the FitBit Charge 2 is the light at night time. The screen automatically comes on when you turn the watch towards you, even at night time. So I have often woken up to the light in my face when I turn on my side in bed. This can interfere with your sleep if you are already a light sleeper. This has only happened to me twice so it isn’t a massive complaint but something to keep in mind if you want to wear it at night.

Price: €159.99

Worth It?: Yes. If you are finding it difficult to stay on track and monitor your health and fitness, the FitBit is great. It really is encouraging to see how many steps you have taken in one day and how many calories you have burned as a result. Sometimes we think we need to pay a lot for a gym membership but the FitBit shows you that you can make improvements simply by moving more.
