#FancyTrends: Should You Have A Grooms Cake?
Ladies, you may be asking yourself what is a grooms cake and should you have one? Well we have the low down! Keep reading to find out on this weeks #FancyTrends: Should You Have A Grooms Cake?
What Is A Grooms Cake?
A grooms cake is exactly what it says on the tin. It is a cake that the groom has planned himself, from ingredients to the way it looks. The groom cake tradition started in Victorian England where the bride and groom would have separate cakes on their wedding day. The grooms cake is often served at a different time to the traditional cake or ‘brides’ cake. For example, the day after the wedding or at the rehearsal dinner. Back then the ‘brides’ cake would stay traditional in ingredients and decoration. The grooms cake however could include more flavours, colours and decoration as the brides cake was seen as too ‘feminine’ for the groom. These cakes are often decorated to reflect the grooms interest such as football, cars or music. (Think kids birthday cakes ladies….) This tradition is now used mainly in the United States but some couples in Ireland and the UK have adapted it recently.
Should I Have One?
The simple answer is; if you want to… If you have the budget, why not?! Normally the groom would have very little say in choosing what wedding cake to have on the big day. Be honest, if he had his way it would be in the shape of a red Ferrari or a PlayStation…or somehow both! But with a grooms cake, he can have just that! Not a huge fan of this idea? Well you can still keep the traditional cake as the main focus and just have the grooms cake as something fun to tuck into later. We think that a great idea would be to bring it out after everyone has had a few glasses of bubbly and thrown a few shapes on the dance floor. They will need to keep their energy up ladies, and what better way to do this than with cake. You could also break tradition and have both cakes beside each other and cut one after the other. This sounds like great fun!

Our Verdict
Well ladies, let us put it like this…you will have two cakes on the big day and we see absolutely nothing wrong with that! Whether you want to stick with tradition or just have some fun, we think a grooms cake is a great idea. This is fantastic if you are looking to steer clear of wedding traditions and break the mould. Weddings are changing and yours can be whatever way you like it. We are now even seeing the introduction of Feminist weddings. So we say break the rules and have your cake and eat it too!
