#FancyTrends: Social Media At A Hen Party Or Wedding
Wondering whether or not to ban social media on your special day? Check out this weeks #FancyTrends: Social Media At A Hen Party Or Wedding.
Social media at a special occasion can be a tricky one. Nowadays we are all glued to our phone posting pictures, tweeting, tagging, sharing and liking. It has become part of our daily routine. So what happens when you attend an occasion like a hen party or wedding? Do you ban the use of Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat or do you let guests get snap happy? With so many mixed opinions, TheFancyHen.ie team decided to delve a little deeper.
What do we think?
Opinions are divided here in TheFancyHen.ie office. Some see no harm in sharing how much fun you are having while others think sharing too much can make the occasion less personal. However, the majority agree that guests should hold off when it comes to posting on social media during these special moments. After all, unplugging every now and again is good for us both mentally and physically so why not take this as an opportunity to digitally detox? Make sure you check out our Four Reasons To Unplug Yourself blog for all the benefits behind putting the phone and laptop away from time to time.
Why?
So let’s look at some reasons why it might be a good idea to keep the phone in your bag at a hen party or wedding…
The dress
Now ladies, we can all agree with how important the wedding dress is. After months of searching, weeks of altering and keeping it a secret, the dress reveal is a precious moment. A moment that you wouldn’t dare ruin! Posting pictures of the bride in her wedding dress before she has is a big no-no. This could also be the case for the bride on the hen party. Let her post pictures of her dress before you and the hens do. This is her big day after all!
Private couple
Before you take out the phone, think about the couple. Are they very private in other areas of their life? Do they spend much, if any time on social media? If they haven’t specified, it is always a good idea to double check. You may mean no harm but the last thing you want to do is upset the bride or groom.
Distraction
We all know that phones and social media can be a huge distraction. This is bad news any day of the week but especially when it comes to hen parties or weddings. These occasions are so special to be a part of so make sure enjoy them. While you spend time finding the perfect filter you might miss some special moments that you will regret missing later. Think about it, how annoying is it when you see someone glued to their phone at a gig for example. You wish they would simply stop watching the concert through their phone. You don’t want to be that person do you?!
Personal event
If you think about it, you were invited for a reason. And those who are not there were not invited for a reason also. The couple chose to spend this special moment in their life with you, not your 500 Instagram followers. Just because you post your every waking moment on Snapchat doesn’t mean the couple do. Put your social updates on hold for just one day.
So what do we recommend?
This is a tricky one, but we do recommend waiting. By all means take lots of picture to remember the day and night, just store them in your camera roll. When the festivities are over, start sharing and tagging to your hearts content! A fantastic idea would be for the bride and groom to give the guests a hashtag to use afterwards on social media channels like Instagram. This way the couple and guests can look back on all the photos and maybe even print the ones they love. They also get to see what everyone got up to when they were busy entertaining….perfect! Giving this hashtag to guests the day after will help make sure they don’t post on the day/night.
